Read to Succeed: Liberia's Literacy Leap
Read to Succeed: Liberia’s Literacy Leap is an innovative after-school literacy program designed to elevate the reading skills of middle and high school students in Liberia. Spearheaded by Action Oriented Youth of Liberia, Inc. (AOYL), this initiative aims to bridge the literacy gap for students reading below grade level, fostering a culture of reading and academic excellence through a blend of traditional instruction and modern technology.
Objectives
1. Elevate Reading Proficiency: Improve students’ reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.
2. Close the Literacy Gap: Ensure that all participating students achieve grade-level reading proficiency.
3. Cultivate a Love for Reading: Engage students with diverse and appealing reading materials to instill a lifelong love for reading.
4. Incorporate Technology: Utilize digital tools and platforms to enhance learning experiences and track progress.
Context and Need
According to UNESCO data, the literacy rate for individuals aged 15-24 in Liberia is approximately 59%, indicating that a significant portion of the youth population struggles with basic reading and writing skills. Furthermore, the World Bank reports that many students in Liberia are performing below the expected proficiency levels for their age group, with a substantial number of students lacking foundational literacy skills.
In rural areas, the situation is often more severe, with even lower literacy rates and fewer resources available for students. Many schools lack adequate libraries and access to modern technology, exacerbating the challenges faced by students in achieving literacy.
The National Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) conducted in Liberia revealed that a large proportion of students in the early grades were unable to read a single word correctly, highlighting the urgent need for effective literacy interventions at both the primary and secondary school levels.
