EmpowerHer: Boxing and Education Initiative

EmpowerHer is an exciting and transformative program developed by Action Oriented Youth of Liberia Inc. Our mission is to create a supportive community that champions girls’ involvement in boxing, challenging the gender stereotypes that often surround the sport. The program offers a variety of activities including weekly boxing training, first aid certification, referee and judges’ training, boxing clinics, amateur boxing leagues, and coach development programs, all designed to foster women’s participation in boxing.

Partnership with Liberia Boxing Association:

We’re thrilled to collaborate with the Liberia Boxing Association (LBA) to help drive our mission forward. This partnership allows us to leverage LBA’s extensive network, facilities, and equipment, making our training programs more accessible and impactful. Together, we’ll host events and competitions to promote women’s boxing across Liberia, showcasing the talents and strength of female boxers.

Liberia Boxing Landscape:

Boxing in Liberia has a deep cultural and historical significance, with the sport being popular across various regions. Despite its rich tradition, gender stereotypes still pose significant barriers for women. Through EmpowerHer, we aim to shift these perceptions by highlighting the skills, determination, and resilience of female boxers, encouraging more girls to take up the sport.

Data and Impact:

Interest in women’s boxing is growing in Liberia, but challenges remain. According to the Liberia Boxing Association, women make up only a small percentage of registered boxers. “EmpowerHer” seeks to change this by offering inclusive and accessible training opportunities. By engaging local communities and schools, we aim to increase the participation of young women in boxing, demonstrating the positive impact of their involvement in the sport.

Goals and Outcomes:

Our key objectives include:

  • Increasing female participation in boxing by 20% over the next
  • Conducting 50 educational workshops and training sessions
  • Establishing a sustainable platform for the development of women’s boxing in
  • Creating role models and ambassadors to inspire future generations of female

Through “EmpowerHer,” we are committed to fostering a culture of empowerment, resilience, and inclusivity within Liberia’s boxing community, ultimately challenging gender norms and advancing the sport for all.

Partnership with School Physical Education Programs:

In addition to our work with the Liberia Boxing Association, “EmpowerHer” is partnering with school physical education (PE) programs across Liberia, targeting girls aged 8 to 18. These partnerships are crucial for expanding our reach and instilling the values of women’s participation in boxing from a young age.

Integration into School Curriculums:

We collaborate with PE teachers and school administrators to incorporate boxing into existing physical education curriculums. Through workshops, demonstrations, and guest coaching sessions, we introduce students—especially girls—to the fundamentals of boxing in a safe and encouraging environment.

Benefits of Collaboration:

Partnering with school PE programs offers numerous benefits:

  • Educational Opportunities: Incorporating boxing into PE introduces students to a new sport, enhancing their physical literacy and overall fitness.
  • Promoting Gender Equality: Emphasizing girls’ participation in boxing challenges stereotypes and encourages inclusive sports engagement.
  • Community Engagement: Involving schools helps build community support for female boxers and promotes a positive image of women in sports.

Program Activities in Schools:

“EmpowerHer” will deliver tailored activities within schools, such as:
Organizing boxing clinics and workshops led by experienced coaches and athletes. Providing educational sessions on fitness, nutrition, and the importance of sportsmanship.
Hosting friendly inter-school boxing events and exhibitions to showcase the talents of young female boxers.

Long-Term Impact:

By partnering with school PE programs, “EmpowerHer” aims to:
– Increase interest and participation in boxing among girls aged 12 to 18.
– Build confidence, discipline, and resilience through sports.
– Break down barriers and challenge gender norms within school communities.

Collaborative Approach:

Our program is built on collaboration, inviting PE teachers and school leaders to join us in creating a supportive environment for female boxers. Together, we can empower the next generation of young women to excel in sports and beyond, fostering a culture of equality and empowerment within Liberia’s educational system.

“EmpowerHer” is more than just a boxing program—it’s a movement to inspire, uplift, and empower young women through the sport of boxing. By working with the Liberia Boxing Association and school PE programs, we’re making strides towards a more inclusive and supportive sports community for girls in Liberia.
