Our Speak Out Initiative targets individuals between the ages of 15 and 35, focusing on Liberian youths and adults who are both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. Domestic violence is recognized as one of Liberia’s critical issues. Through our Speak Out Initiative, we aim to mitigate and alleviate the prevalence of domestic violence within various communities in Liberia.
Why Focus on Youth?
The youth population in Liberia is significant, with a substantial portion falling within the 15-35 age range. According to recent data, Liberia’s population is estimated to be around 5 million, with approximately 63% under the age of 25. This highlights the urgency of addressing domestic violence within this demographic, as they represent both the current and future fabric of Liberian society.
The Impact of Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence not only harms individuals but also erodes the social and economic fabric of communities. In Liberia, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 45% of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner. This staggering statistic underscores the need for targeted interventions like the Speak Out Initiative to break the cycle of violence and empower youths to create safer and healthier environments.
